LOFFELSTEIN RETAINING

The Löffelstein retaining system is a versatile, dry-stack, interlocking retaining wall solution known for its strength and aesthetic appeal. Its unique design allows for both structural stability and natural plant growth within the wall face.

The Löffelstein retaining heavy duty block supports retaining walls over 3.5m in height. Its thickened base prevents compression under the wall’s own weight, making it ideal for geosynthetic reinforced slopes, geonails, or rock-anchored cut slopes. Engineers rely on the L750 block for critical applications that require maximum mass per m².

The Löffelstein retaining vertical block includes undercut corners, allowing for an 87° wall angle. Builders often use it alongside standard blocks in confined spaces or taller structures. When paired with geosynthetics, cement stabilization, geonailing, or rock anchors, the system offers significant savings in both time and cost compared to conventional retaining methods.

Design foundations according to each project’s specific requirements. In many cases, a simple concrete foundation works well.

To lay Löffelstein retaining blocks, start with the first course spaced at 180mm on a level or sloped base. Stack the second course centrally over the first to interlock. Use a spirit level for alignment. If necessary, trim block edges or pack stabilized soil to correct unevenness. Stretch a fish line across the outermost blocks to guide a straight wall line. After placing each row, fill the blocks with plant-supportive soil and compact the backfill thoroughly.

For curved walls, follow minimum radii of 2m for L300 and 3m for L500. As convex walls rise, curves become tighter; concave walls widen. Adjust the layout as needed and re-align every few rows.
